Jointly with Poltegor Engineering Ltd. in Poland, Hitachi, Ltd. received an order for a flue gas desulfurization unit for coal-fired power plant Nos. 4 to 8 (200 MW/5 units) of Elektrownia "Kozienice" SA which have been operated in the suburb of Warsaw. The total amount of the contract is approx. 4 billion yen. The desulfurization unit is scheduled to be operated from March 2007.
In Europe, the control against sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) discharged from coal-fired power plant will be tightened from January 2008, and power companies in each European country are taking measures to cope with this regulation such as the introduction of desulfurization units. Because the desulfurization unit can remove more than 90% of SOx included in the flue gas discharged from power plants, the demand for the units will increase in the future towards this regulation enforced in January 2008.
The Kozienice Power Plant where Hitachi will deliver the desulfurization unit this time is located 80 km south of Warsaw and has 10 coal-fired power generation units (2,860 MW in total). The 800 MW desulfurization unit which Hitachi will deliver this time is largest in its capacity not only in Poland but also in Europe. This is a full turn key contract, which means that Hitachi not only manufactures the unit but also installs the unit and conduct its trial run. This kind of contract is first for Hitachi in Europe. The desulfurization unit will be manufactured by Babcock-Hitachi K.K.
